Job summary

Northwell Health in New York seeks a licensed Physical Therapist to organize and conduct prescribed therapy programs in the hospital to restore function after disease or injury and help patients regain independence.

Responsibilities

• Guides use of wheelchairs, braces, canes, crutches, and prosthetic devices.
• Instructs patients on posture and home therapy, and tailors care for those with limited comprehension.
• Keeps up with developments in physical therapy and shares new techniques with the team.
• Records and reports patient progress for rehabilitation team review.

Job Responsibility

• Plans therapy program for each patient, involving physical means, such as exercise, massage, heat, water, light and electricity, as prescribed by physician.
• Applies diagnostic and prognostic muscle, nerve, joint and functional ability tests.
• Directs and aids patient in active and passive exercises, muscle reeducation, and gait and functional training, utilizing pulleys and weights, steps and inclined surfaces.
• Gives whirlpool and contrast baths and applies moist packs.
• Directs patient in care and use of wheelchairs, braces, canes, crutches, and prosthetic and orthotic devices.
• Gives instruction in posture control and therapeutic procedures to be continued by the patient.
• Adapts conventional physical therapy techniques to meet the need of patients unable to comprehend verbal commands or voluntarily carry out a regime of therapeutic exercises.
• Evaluates, records, and reports on patient’s progress for review by other members of the rehabilitative team.
• Requisitions supplies and equipment.
• Conducts or participates in training medical and nursing personnel other workers in physician therapy techniques and objectives.
• Keeps abreast of developments in the physical therapy field; introduces and demonstrates to staff members new techniques, equipment and research findings.

Job Qualification

• Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• Must be currently licensed as a Physical Therapist in New York State.
