Job summary

The Maryland School for the Blind seeks a licensed Physical Therapist to join its interdisciplinary team on campus. You will assess students, conduct admissions screenings, and manage a caseload within an integrated therapy model, providing both direct and indirect services while maintaining records.

You will also train staff and families, monitor program implementation, and stay current through ongoing professional development.

Job description

With supervision, provides physical therapy assessment, treatment, and consultation as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Essential Functions:

1. Conducts physical therapy assessments and admission screenings.

2. Manages a student caseload using an integrated therapy model: provides direct and

indirect service, maintains records, and participates in interdisciplinary programming.

3. Provides consultation and training to staff, parents, and community based professionals

4. Monitors the implementation of student programs and use of adaptive positioning equipment, assistive devices, wheelchairs and orthotics.

5. Continued professional development and education.

Marginal Functions:

1. Provides new employee training on student transfers, lifts and mechanical lifts, evacuation devices.

2. Move equipment between buildings; assist with ordering and maintaining office, clinic and workroom spaces.

3. Supervises clinical students.

4. Performs additional duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS:

Equipment Used: Developmental therapy equipment, exercise equipment, positioning equipment, wheelchairs, orthotics, assistive devices, lifting devices, computers, hand tools, , telephones, copy machine, car.

Performance Standard: Must consistently demonstrate clinical competence in all areas of performance consistent with recognized standards of the physical therapy profession.

Work Environment and Demands: This is an on campus position, however PT may occur in Multiple indoor and outdoor environments, on and off campus as needed, with a variety of sound, lighting, and temperature conditions. Significant walking between buildings; must be able to lift 35 lbs. routinely.

Work Schedule: 35 daytime hours, Monday through Friday, with a daily 30 minute unpaid lunch. Flextime scheduling available. Some early morning and evening consults and training required with advanced notice and schedule adjustment. This position follows an 11-month calendar (requires working during the 4 week Extended School Year program in the summer).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and General Abilities:

1. Current licensure by the Maryland State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.

2. Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with children, families and interdisciplinary teams.

3. Desire to engage in ongoing learning.

4. Knowledge of normal/abnormal sensori-motor development and musculoskeletal function/dysfunction.

5. Knowledge of appropriate evaluative and treatment techniques for individuals with multiple disabilities 3-21 years of age.

6. Knowledge of orthotics, wheelchairs, adaptive positioning equipment, and assistive devices appropriate for individuals 3-21.

7. Comprehensive knowledge of proper body mechanics and use of mechanical lifts.

8. General knowledge of disabling childhood conditions such as, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury and autism, and their impact on sensori-motor and musculoskeletal development.

After the first year in this position, the employee is required to have:

1. General knowledge of IDEA and COMAR regulations and service implications; crisis intervention and behavior

management; data collection; visual impairment/blindness relative to sensori-motor development;

communication systems; best practices for bus transportation; MSB policies and procedures.

2. Basic knowledge to provide clinical supervision, basic skills for minor equipment adjustment and repairs.

3. General understanding of school based versus medical models of service delivery.
