Job summary

RTX BBN Technologies in Middletown, RI, is seeking a Physical Systems Engineer for a primarily on-site role. You will support requirements development, design, fabrication, and documentation across multiple engineering disciplines, including shipboard systems and payloads.

A secret clearance is required and 4 days on-site per week may be needed. The candidate will work with a small team to manage parallel technical activities, develop technical data packages, and present status reports.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s in STEM with 2 years’ experience, or an advanced degree.

RTX BBN Technologies, a high-tech research & development company, seeks a creative self-starter that is organized, hands‑on, and people-centered to fill the role of Physical Systems Engineer in our Physical Sciences & Systems (PS2) business unit.

This position is for a multi-functional professional in at least two of the following engineering fields; systems, mechanical, electrical, software, chemical, and industrial. The individual will support requirements development and analysis, design, physical fabrication and assembly, process development, technical evaluation of systems ranging in maturity from conceptual to high TRL products, and the generation of technical documentation. The ideal candidate will possess a proven background in integrated systems design, technical data package development, and a robust methodology for performing organized and traceable iterative design and evaluation cycles.

A successful individual possesses the ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively within a small development team to identify, prioritize, and execute tasks that align with project objectives. Project topics include, but are not limited to, shipboard systems, unmanned platforms and payloads, and complex sensing and data collection systems. The candidate shall have the aptitude to manage and track multiple parallel technical activities. This position will generally require 4 days on-site per week.

What You Will Do

• Develop, analyze, decompose, and produce and execute methodologies to satisfy system requirements and objectives.

• Create and analyze designs using computer modeling and simulation tools (e.g. Solidworks, Matlab, Simulink, Ansys, custom software scripts, etc.).

• Produce technical documentation including specifications, drawings, design walk-thru guides, test procedures, work instructions, and whitepapers.

• Produce and maintain technical metric tracking documents such as Size, Weight, Power, and Cost (SWaP-C) spreadsheets.

• Independently perform market and scientific database research to inform design approaches.

• Interface and collaborate with internal and external scientists, engineers, and program management.

• Communicate through oral presentations and written reports on project status.

• This position will require some domestic travel (up to 10%).

Qualifications You Must Have

• Typically requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and 2 years of prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field.

• The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret US government issued security clearance is required.

• Experience in organizing and executing multidiscipline system design and evaluation.

Qualifications We Prefer

• Experience in hardware system optimization including technical performance, manufacturing, and cost.

• Experience with hands‑on fabrication and assembly of electromechanical devices.

• Experience in software development.

• Experience developing and maintaining requirements traceability matrices.

• An active security clearance.

The salary range for this role is 68,900 USD - 131,100 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
