Job summary

Asplundh Engineering Services (AES) is seeking a Substation Physical Design Engineer to shape the future of power infrastructure. You will contribute to the design of medium and high voltage systems, working remotely with a nationwide team across the full project lifecycle from concept through commissioning.

Ideal candidates bring 4+ years in HV design, familiarity with NEC/NESC/IEEE, and experience with switchgear, transformers, protection, and cables.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification; Registered PE preferred.
  • 4+ years of HV design experience.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NESC, and IEEE/ANSI standards.
  • Experience with MV/LV switchgear, transformers, protection, cables.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the conceptual, preliminary and final design of MV/HV systems.
  • Specify and procure equipment, develop budgets and estimates.
  • Support project management goals and quality standards.
  • Coordinate with sub-consultants and customers to meet delivery dates.
  • Maintain and update engineering standards for quality products.
  • Assist project management to deliver on time and within budget.

Asplundh Engineering Services (AES) is growing—and we’re looking for a Substation Physical Design Engineer who is ready to shape the future of power infrastructure.

At AES, you’ll be part of a collaborative engineering community within the Asplundh Infrastructure Group, working across the full lifecycle of critical utility projects—from concept and design, through construction and commissioning, all the way to maintaining in-service assets. About The Role

As a Substation Physical Design Engineer, you will contribute to project teams to develop custom engineering solutions that directly support our customers’ toughest challenges. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast paced, evolving industry and wants to make a visible impact through technical excellence and innovative thinking.

This position includes a remote work schedule, giving you the freedom to contribute meaningfully—without relocating—while teaming up with a dynamic, nationwide crew that collaborates seamlessly across time zones.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll take on a variety of high impact technical responsibilities that are essential to delivering safe, reliable, and innovative solutions. You’ll work hands on with complex systems, collaborate across disciplines, and help guide projects to successful outcomes. Your work will include, but is not limited to:

  • The conceptual, preliminary and final detailed design of new, upgraded and expanded medium voltage and high voltage systems including, Electrical Arrangement, Electrical Sections (Elevations), Electrical Connection Details, Below Grade Conduit Plan and Details, Cable Trench Plan and Details, Equipment Grounding Plan and Details, Lightning Protection Plan, Outdoor Illumination Plan, Detailed Bill of Material, Electrical Grounding
  • Specification and purchase of equipment
  • Design and construction estimates
  • Working on project teams supporting all quality and project management goals
  • Understanding and delivering results based on client specific standards and requirements
  • Interfacing with the customer to deliver a quality product by scheduled delivery date
  • Maintain and update engineering standards to ensure high-quality products
  • Assist with Project management to deliver projects on time and within budget
  • Work with sub-consultants to coordinate deliverables

An ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and planning skills while exceling in a team-based environment. The candidate should approach all tasks in a detail-oriented manner, with a strong sense of ownership over all deliverables.

What You Bring
  • 4+ years of experience in high and medium voltage design engineering
  • Knowledge of applicable NEC, NESC, and IEEE/ANSI standards
  • Experience with electrical equipment such as: MV and LV switchgear, pad mount transformers, Station Class Transformers, panel boards, breakers, protective relays, inverter, battery, battery chargers, disconnect switches, surge arrestors, dead front disconnect switch, medium voltage cable, low voltage cable, control cable, fiber optic cable
  • Proficiency in computers using Microsoft programs
  • AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience
  • Project management software experience
  • Ability to travel occasionally
Education & Credentials
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) professional certification, Registered PE preferred
Compensation & Pay Transparency

The posted compensation for this position will vary based on the candidate’s experience, skills, and geographic location, and will be determined in accordance with applicable pay equity and wage transparency laws.

For candidates in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Minnesota, this range reflects the good faith compensation the company reasonably expects to pay under applicable state transparency laws.

Additionally, candidates are eligible for a discretionary incentive plan, profit sharing, and benefits.
