Physical Science Teacher – Washington High

Location: Washington High School, Kansas City, Kansas

Job Overview

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students. Washington High School is one of the district’s flagship schools, offering a rigorous curriculum to a diverse student body.

Essential Responsibilities

• Implement 21st‑century skills into the curriculum.
• Teach full‑day classroom courses in physical science and related subjects.
• Assess student ability, set learning goals, and maintain accurate assessment documentation.
• Plan and deliver instruction using a variety of appropriate strategies and activities that meet student needs.
• Manage classroom behavior and collaborate in school‑wide behavior management.
• Communicate instructional expectations and student progress to students and parents, both written and verbally.
• Document student progress, maintain records, and submit required reports.
• Collaborate with colleagues to design effective instructional goals and curriculum.
• Participate in professional growth activities, staff meetings, and in‑service training.
• Assist in documentation of student progress and submit reports efficiently.
• Ensure the instructional environment is safe, healthy, and conducive to learning.
• Participate in extracurricular activities as requested.
• Attend IEP meetings for IDEA students.
• Apply knowledge of content, curriculum, materials, and equipment relevant to the specialty.
• Maintain awareness of student growth and development appropriate to grade level.
• Engage in ongoing study of current research and theory.
• Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and student needs.
• Build and maintain relationships with students, parents, and peers; serve as a family advocate and participate in home visits.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Display excellent human‑relations skills.
• Manage the physical demands of teaching, including moving around the classroom.
• Exhibit patience, caring, and motivation to support student success.
• Take attendance and maintain registers per board policy.
• Follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments.
• Remain courteous, professional, and present a neat appearance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Meet the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education.
• Hold a Kansas teaching certificate in the instructional area of responsibility.

Communication and Organization

Maintain communication with school personnel, parents, and guardians to support student needs and use technology effectively in job performance.

Reasoning Ability

Demonstrate the ability to solve practical problems and manage situations with limited standardization. Interpret instructions delivered in written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled form.

Language Skills

Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Write reports, curriculum materials, correspondence, and protocols. Present information clearly and respond to inquiries from administrators, staff, parents, students, or the general public.

Physical Demands

Regularly sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear. Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified employees with disabilities.

Work Environment

Typically loud; noise level is within acceptable limits for a teaching environment. Directly responsible for student safety, work output, and well‑being.
