University of California, Irvine is seeking a Physical Plant Supervisor to oversee the Anteater Recreation Center facilities, stand-alone plant, and related building systems. You will supervise trades staff, manage maintenance programs, and ensure energy efficiency and safety across the campus recreation facilities.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, specialty trade certification, and experience in energy management systems.

Your Role on the Team

Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction and supervision to skilled crafts and trades workers, in accordance with established policies and management guidance. Areas of supervision include but are not limited to carpentry, plumbing, boiler operators, HVAC, abatement and insulation, electrical, and painting. Administers policies that directly affect subordinate staff. Recommends changes to department policies and practices, identifies risks and responds accordingly, and provides priority setting and workflow analysis. The Physical Plant Supervisor is responsible for the oversight, maintenance, repair, and operational integrity of the Anteater Recreation Center, including its stand‑alone plant, aquatic plaza, and building facilities, as well as the UCI Boathouse Facility. This includes the maintenance, repair, and installation of commercial and industrial building mechanical equipment, climate control systems, heating and ventilation systems, chilled water systems, hydronic systems, heat exchangers, fans and fan motors, pumps and pump motors, electronic controls, and pneumatic controls. The supervisor also monitors and manages the designated energy management system to ensure operational efficiency and sustainability.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Solid knowledge and skills in the specialty craft supervised.
  • Solid supervisory skills to include organization, scheduling, assigning work and ensuring quality standards are met.
  • Skills to actively promote and maintain safety standards.
  • Solid skills to effectively select and evaluate staff, and to appropriately handle disciplinary issues.
  • Knowledge of building mechanical, HVAC and utility systems. Knowledge and experience with maintenance and repair of Energy Management Control Systems, building systems, pumps and motors and heat exchangers systems.
  • Extensive knowledge and operational experience of pool systems
  • Skill in communicating effectively and supporting staff both verbally and in writing. Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient computer/technical skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Certification in a specialty skilled trade required.
  • Pool & Spa Operator Certification required.
  • 5-10 yearsin facilities management, building maintenance, or a related skilled trades field.

Preferred:

  • Ability to ensure that quality and customer service standards are communicated, implemented and continually monitored.
  • Ability to establish and maintain interpersonal relations with diverse campus personnel, contractors, and vendors.
  • Ability to be flexible to shift priorities, demands, and timelines. Strong organizational skills to successfully complete multiple assignments with competing deadlines. Skill in working effectively, following through on assignments with minimal direction and a fluctuating workload.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire staff to provide the highest level of quality and service to Campus Recreation and campus constituents. Experience and/or knowledge of UC systems, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Knowledge and maintenance experience of commercial kitchen systems. Knowledge of fitness equipment maintenance and repair. Experience in developing and executing predictive and preventative maintenance systems for stand‑alone plant and building systems equipment. Extensive experience with computerized energy management systems and controls. Knowledge and experience with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and ability to perform repairs on such systems.
  • Solid financial skills to accurately project costs of potential jobs and to consistently complete work within established budgetary and time constraints.
  • HVAC/Refrigeration certification.
  • 1-3 yearsin supervisory, leadership, or management role.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $97,000.00- $121,950.00 (Annual).
