Summary Statement

This class is involved in completing basic repairs in multiple trade fields and performing routine preventative maintenance and repair work within various structures and transportation related infrastructure including but not limited to roadways, bridges, guardrail and movable bridges. This position must be available to work overtime as needed, and during storm events and other emergency events on short notice and in some cases no advance notice.

Summary Statement

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Performs routine maintenance and preventative maintenance on equipment, interior and exterior of facility which may include replacing light bulbs, lubricating pumps, cleaning filters, checking fan belts, and inspecting gauges and pumps.
  • Performs minor and basic repairs in trade areas such as plumbing, painting, carpentry, installs masonite and tile, repairs door locks, window blinds and tracks and wall boards.
  • Assists in machinery and equipment repair.
  • Assists in groundkeeping activities, snow/ice removal, grass cutting, trash removal.
  • Assists technical supervisor in plumbing, building repairs and structural additions when required and may assist in the operation of treatment and disposal plants and basic repairs to other system elements when necessary.
  • Operates machinery and vehicles, transports passengers, tools, equipment and materials, and assists in maintaining and servicing equipment.
  • May perform highway lighting or drawbridge maintenance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS For Physical Plant Maintenance/Trades Mechanic I

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Knowledge of operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
  • Knowledge of performing work in a variety of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

JOB REQUIREMENTS For Physical Plant Maintenance/Trades Mechanic II

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Six months experience in operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
  • Six months experience in performing work in a variety of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
  • Knowledge of interpreting blueprints, schematics or technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of record keeping.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Conditions of Hire

Pre-employment Drug Testing: Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process. DelDOT Medical Exam: Applicants who meet the job requirements for the position, and who are made a conditional offer of employment, shall be required to meet the physical qualifications and examination requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations to hold a commercial driver’s license unless they are approved for either an Intra-State CDL Waiver of a Federal Waiver or Exemption. In addition, applicants must not have incurred four or more serious traffic violations during the previous three years as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Code. The Department of Transportation will obtain driving record information maintained by the Division of Motor Vehicles for the preceding three year period. As a condition of hire you must possess a valid CDL Class A or B drivers license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving) OR obtain one during the initial 90-day probationary period. This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
