Job Summary

The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections is seeking a Physical Plant Director, responsible for overseeing the physical plant of the Adobe Mountain School, a complex over 300 acres with more than 40 aging buildings. Responsibilities include capital improvement, building renewal, construction, project management, facility maintenance, custodial and groundskeeping, and representing the agency on facility-related matters. The role involves managing physical plant functions, emergency response, standard work order processes, preventative maintenance, and grounds management, ensuring compliance with state rules and regulations. The director will oversee personnel, including work assignments, evaluations, hiring, training, and disciplinary actions.

This position is available for full-time remote work within Arizona, with flexible arrangements depending on department needs and performance.

Job Duties
  • Manage and supervise maintenance, custodial, and groundskeeping departments, including direct and indirect reports.
  • Oversee skilled and unskilled labor, tool and key accountability, and ensure sound practices within a correctional environment.
  • Conduct employee evaluations, hiring, training, and discipline.
  • Analyze feedback for improvements and support staff training and resource access.
  • Provide coaching, fidelity checks, and refresher training sessions.
  • Maintain records of training activities and outcomes, and prepare reports.
  • Collaborate with Youth Program Officers on case plans, ensuring they are individualized and address youth needs.
  • Review case plan progress and make adjustments as needed.
  • Design and implement systems for managing physical plant functions, including maintenance and grounds management.
  • Schedule maintenance and grounds activities to ensure timely completion.
  • Manage capital projects, prepare cost estimates, and oversee project work with architects and engineers.
  • Assist in capital budget preparation and represent the agency on facility matters.
  • Approve materials and equipment orders, ensuring accountability and compliance.
  • Participate in meetings and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Of
  • Arizona personnel rules and practices, including performance appraisal.
  • Building/construction laws, regulations, codes, and licensing requirements.
  • Architectural and engineering principles, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Project management for diverse workforce and skilled trades.
  • Fiscal management, including budgeting, procurement, and inventory control.
  • Building codes, OSHA, EPA, fire codes, and safety practices.
  • Computer skills in Outlook, Word, Excel, and internet research.

  • Experience with work order systems and correctional facilities preferred.
Pre-Employment Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license if driving is required. Must pass background checks, drug screening, and physical exam. No felony convictions allowed. Current state employees must have acceptable performance history.
