Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering (ABET Accredited).
  • 0–2 years engineering experience; recent graduates welcome.
  • Local candidate within commuting distance of Chattanooga or Knoxville, TN.
  • FE certification preferred; passing the FE exam is a plus.
  • Fast learner who can pick up new concepts quickly.
  • Self-starter who can work with guidance but seeks answers independently.
  • Clear communicator across face-to-face, on the phone, and via email.

Responsibilities

  • Work on a team of drafters, designers, and engineers.
  • Develop equipment, foundation, grounding, and cable routing plans.
  • Create BOMs and maintain QA with client and internal checklists.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Progress to independent project ownership.

Mesa seeks an entry-level Substation Physical Engineer who's looking to start their career in the electric power industry. This position is for our Power Delivery Substation group, which supports various clients across the United States.

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering (ABET Accredited).
  • 0-2 years of engineering experience - Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Local candidate - Located within commuting distance of Chattanooga, TN or Knoxville, TN.
  • FE certification preferred - Having passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is a plus, but not required.
  • Fast learner - You can pick up new concepts, standards, and software quickly.
  • Self-starter - You'll get direction from senior engineers, but you're comfortable hunting down answers on your own when the path isn't obvious.
  • Clear communicator - You feel comfortable reaching out to others with questions and can communicate professionally face-to-face, on the phone, and over email.
What You'll Learn
  • Substation Physical concepts - Fundamentals of foundation, grounding, and cable routing design, as well as equipment power ratings, clearances, and conductor sizing.
  • Design Software - Autodesk AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Excel, etc.
  • Project lifecycle - How a project moves from conception, through design, to completion.
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration - Coordinate with senior engineers, designers, project managers, and client personnel from other groups, such as Protection and Controls, Civil, Studies, etc.
What You'll Do
  • Work on a team of drafters, designers, and engineers.
  • Increase your knowledge under the mentorship of senior engineers.
  • Create equipment, structural, foundation, grounding, and cable routing plans and details.
  • Develop Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Maintain quality assurance standards by completing client and internal checklists.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Perform peer-review of designs.
  • Progress to independent project ownership.
