Position Overview
The interscholastic athletic program at Holton-Arms School embodies the school’s mission to cultivate the potential of young women through the education of the mind, soul, and spirit. Our dynamic athletic program provides an arena for the development of life and leadership skills. Physical and mental challenges in a team context cultivate resilience, responsibility, tenacity of purpose, and a commitment to others. Our athletic teams and physical education classes teach students to challenge themselves and take risks in a culture where failure is considered an excellent opportunity for discovery and growth. Students are given numerous opportunities to develop, excel, and nurture the skills necessary to live healthy active lives. We are committed to developing programs where leaders are cultivated and winning is met with humility and grace.

The Physical Education Teacher and Coach will join a vibrant, collaborative department committed to promoting health, wellness, and teamwork. Reporting to the Director of Physical Education and Athletics, the successful candidate will bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a passion for working with girls and young women in grades 3-12.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach Physical Education classes for grades 3-12
  • Coach two Upper School athletic teams after school and three Middle School teams during the school day
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of Lower, Middle, or Upper School students
  • Develop and implement an engaging, age-appropriate physical education curriculum
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment
  • Collaborate with colleagues and parents to support student growth and well-being
  • Participate actively in the Holton-Arms community beyond the classroom, including school events and activities
  • Model integrity, teamwork, and sportsmanship for students
  • Support athletic department initiatives and help organize interscholastic competitions and events
  • Be part of a supportive, mission-driven community dedicated to empowering young women

Qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Experience teaching Physical Education and coaching athletic teams, preferably in a school setting, with a focus on promoting physical fitness, skill development, and the overall growth of student-athletes through engaging and dynamic educational experiences
  • Ability to coach multiple sports and foster athletic excellence and leadership
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset
  • Ability to connect with students and understand the developmental needs of girls and young women
  • Proficiency with educational technology and a willingness to innovate in teaching practices
  • Skilled in juggling various athletic programs, events, and student needs while maintaining a high standard of performance and support in fast-moving and high-energy settings.
  • Effective in working with coaches, parents, students, and other faculty members to create a positive and inclusive environment for student-athletes, fostering teamwork and mutual respect.
  • Meticulous in planning and executing athletic programs, addressing challenges with foresight, and ensuring smooth operations of all activities related to student development and performance.

Salary and Benefits

The average salary range for this position is $70,000 to $100,000, the exact salary to be determined based on education and experience. We use a step scale to determine teacher salary. Early career teachers are initially compensated less than the listed salary range and highly experienced teachers are compensated more than the listed salary range. Additional stipends are available for coaching, certain club sponsorship, and significant commitments outside of the classroom. Benefits include health insurance with a generous employer contribution to medical, dental, and vision; life and disability insurance; 403b retirement savings with an employer match and non-elective contribution; employee assistance program, tuition remission for eligible children; professional development opportunities; paid parental leave after one year of employment; paid sick and personal days; and lunch is provided on school days.
