Position Hours

The Physical Education & Extended Care Lead is a 10-month position. Typical working hours are Monday–Friday 10:45am–6:45pm.

Physical Education Guide - Position Summary (20%)

The Physical Education Guide implements Breakthrough Montessori’s in-school physical education program. They are responsible for teaching and planning daily PE lessons in accordance with the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s (OSSE) physical education standards
and the developmental needs of the students.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement physical education curriculum based on OSSE’s physical education standards for children in grades PK4–6th that promotes movement, coordination, teamwork, and physical wellness.
  • Collaborate with the Principal and the classroom teams to align PE lessons with developmental needs.
  • Maintain attendance records and observation notes related to physical education and share relevant information with classroom teams.
  • Organize and maintain physical education equipment and materials.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive environment that encourages students with all abilities to participate and grow in physical confidence and skill.

Extended Care Lead - Position Summary (80%)

The Extended Care Lead is responsible for supporting and implementing the vision of the Principal through effective planning, supervision, and execution of the Extended Day program. This role ensures that the after-school environment aligns with Montessori values, maintains operational excellence, and fosters strong communication with staff, families, and community partners.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Principal to plan and implement a high-quality Extended Day program aligned with the school’s Montessori philosophy and vision.
  • Coordinate with Enrichment Program Vendors (Monday Intersession & Aftercare Tuesday–Friday): Partner with both Monday Intersession vendors and Tuesday–Friday aftercare program providers to ensure high-quality enrichment programming during afterschool hours and early-release Mondays. Key responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring all program partners are fully informed of Breakthrough policies and procedures
  • Communicating with families about enrichment and intersession opportunities
  • Managing and overseeing student enrollment in these programs
  • Coordinating student transitions to program providers
  • Maintaining up-to-date rosters and distributing them to the appropriate vendors
  • Observe and manage student behavior and implement Breakthrough’s disciplinary policies.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to Extended Day staff, ensuring coverage, clear scheduling, and alignment with program goals.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to review plans, address concerns, and ensure readiness for upcoming weeks.
  • Ensure that the extended day care staff uphold the Montessori values of respect, independence, and integrity within the Extended Day environment.
  • Support staff in setting consistent expectations for student behavior and maintaining high standards within the Montessori context.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for extended day care call-outs/ staff absences and coordinate coverage.
  • Maintain digital records of weekly activity planning and implementation using Google Drive.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance and snack records for all Extended Day participants.
  • Maintain logs of behavior incidents and minor injury reports.
  • Monitor and manage family payments and related documentation as it pertains to the Extended Day program.
  • Order and manage inventory of materials, ensuring items are available one month in advance of scheduled activities.
  • Prepare and maintain the after-school environment using the provided Closing Checklist to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming space.
  • Participate and serve as a welcoming representative at school gatherings, family engagement events, and occasional public events outside of regular school hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal to support the mission and smooth operation of the school.

Required Competencies and Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students, parents, and families.
  • Experience managing aftercare or enrichment programs.
  • Montessori experience preferred. Without previous Montessori experience, demonstrate an eagerness to learn about the method and support its implementation.
