Job summary

Monarch Quantum in Boston is seeking a Photonics Test Automation & Measurement Engineer to own the hands-on characterization of photonic integrated circuits (PICs). You will build and run free-space and fiber-coupled optical setups, align and image modes, and develop automated test infrastructure to measure device performance accurately and repeatably.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience measuring and characterizing photonic devices or PICs.
• Practical experience building basic free-space optical setups.
• Experience with fiber coupling and free-space coupling techniques.
• Proficiency in Python for test automation and data analysis; comfort extending codebases.
• Experience with photonic and electrical test equipment and signal analysis.
• Strong organizational and communication skills across design, fabrication and test teams.

Responsibilities

• Measure and characterize photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on bench and wafer scale.
• Build, align, and maintain free-space optical setups for PIC coupling.
• Perform and optimize fiber-to-chip and free-space-to-chip coupling.
• Image and analyze optical mode profiles to evaluate mode quality and coupling efficiency.
• Build and maintain automated test infrastructure for optical/electrical characterization.
• Develop Python-based test automation and data analysis pipelines.
• Apply design of experiments and statistical methods to qualify test systems.
• Analyze measurement data to validate designs and feed learnings to the design team.
• Document test procedures, setups, and results; contribute to photonic design/simulation.
• Contribute to photonic component design and simulation tools (Lumerical, Tidy3D, COMSOL, gdsfactory).
