Job description

The Patient Service Tech is responsible for accurately performing and processing Point of Care Testing (POC), venous and capillary blood collection from adults, infants, and children, along with all related functions.

Essential Generic Job Functions:

1. Collect blood and/or perform POC testing as assigned.
2. Clean and restock POC supplies and prepare phlebotomy carts/trays.
3. Assist coworkers with blood draws and POC testing.
4. Draw venous or capillary blood from patients of all ages using proper aseptic techniques.
5. Deliver all blood work (stat, timed, routine) within departmental policy time frames.
6. Collect blood into appropriate tubes and culture vials based on testing requirements.
7. Perform and process all POC tests on diverse patient populations.
8. Complete clerical documentation related to POC testing.
9. Report incidents/issues promptly to supervisors.
10. Report supply needs and equipment issues timely.
11. Log refrigerator temperatures daily and report anomalies.
12. Travel to perform phlebotomy and POC testing at health fairs and PSA testing sites, delivering specimens to the laboratory.
13. Identify patient needs based on age, culture, language, and impairments, and modify care accordingly, communicating effectively at their level.
14. Adhere to organizational standards and competencies.

Physical Requirements:

• Lift objects weighing 1 to 25 pounds frequently; up to 40 pounds occasionally; over 41 pounds with assistance.
• Sit or stand for extended periods; perform tasks requiring eye and hand coordination.
• Perform repetitive hand tasks frequently.
• Travel as needed.
• Use phone and PC extensively.
• Require fine hand dexterity, talking, walking, balancing, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, and twisting.

Knowledge, Education, and Skills:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Medical training such as medical assistant or paramedic preferred.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred; required in California, Nevada, and Washington.
