Responsibilities

The Phlebotomy Technician II primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for analysis in the laboratory. They work under supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor. Responsibilities include:

1. Performing computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
2. Understanding test terminology ordered in the laboratory.
3. Communicating effectively and courteously with patients and visitors.
4. Demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment use across all age groups.
5. Processing specimens for microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank.
6. Referring specimens to reference laboratories.
7. Stocking and ordering supplies, maintaining cleanliness of work areas.
8. Processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation.
9. Assisting with sample collection from hospital/OR, sorting, storage, inventory, and other lab tasks.
10. Working across departments during graveyard shifts.
11. Performing point-of-care testing after training and competency validation.
12. Resolving staffing issues and other tasks as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Training:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• BLS certification within 45 days of hire, maintained current.
• Minimum of two years of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
