Job description

Purpose

The phlebotomy supervisor performs phlebotomy, specimen processing and computer entry of test orders. Supports the laboratory manager with phlebotomy production. Maintains adequate phlebotomy staff to meet the daily production need. Trains and performs phlebotomist bi-annual and annual competency assessments. Receives and processes incoming specimens. Processes outgoing specimens for reference labs. Maintains inventory and ordering of lab supplies. Assists clinical lab scientist as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Support the laboratory manager and the technical supervisor in providing the best quality service to physicians, patients and support staff at cCARE in a professional and timely manner
  • Phlebotomy Staffing and schedule: schedule adequate phlebotomy staff to meet the daily production need. Find coverage for sick calls, vacation leave and other leave of absence
  • Employee training: Provides essential training to phlebotomy staff to meet laboratory and state of California requirements
  • Employee competency review: Performs phlebotomist bi-annual and annual competency review to meet state of California requirements
  • Phlebotomy production: Develops workflow to meet the 15-minute draw time per patient
  • Phlebotomy support: Provides adequate support to phlebotomy staff with difficult draws and unresolved physician orders. Responds to physician, office staff and patient needs
  • Medical supply inventory: Orders and maintain adequate medical supplies for daily phlebotomy operation
  • Phlebotomy supervision: be available and accessible to provide support and supervision to phlebotomy staff as needed and according to operation need

Qualifications

  • Effectively performs phlebotomy according to cCARE laboratory procedures and guidelines.
  • Perform safe lab practice at all time using proper lab protection such as goggles, gloves and lab coats and protect the safety of the patients.
  • Effectively performs phlebotomy using appropriate equipment for each patient and test. Prioritizes phlebotomy workload according to schedule and physician needs. Displays adequate phlebotomy productivity.
  • Clearly explains lab procedures to patient. Interacts with patients in a compassionate and professional manner, keeping within scope of practice, and notifies physician, nursing or manager of any concerns.
  • Receives and processes all types of specimens in a timely manner, and according to laboratory procedures and reference sources. Prioritizes processing workload according to test priority and specimen stability.
  • Effectively troubleshoots problems with lab orders, communicating with physician as needed. Ensures patients are rescheduled as needed for redraws.
  • Correctly identifies specimens and patients, according to laboratory procedures. Initiates incident reports if needed.
  • Effectively uses all appropriate functions of laboratory computer system: ordering tests, reference lab requisitions and downloads, clinical information entry, result access and printing, pending tests, test cancellation / documentation, etc.
  • Effectively uses all appropriate functions of the electronic medical record: ordering tests, researching orders, diagnoses, medication history or transcriptions, result access and printing, test cancellation / documentation, visit information, physician orders, notes, etc.
  • Effectively assists clinical lab scientists as requested, preparing specimens for analyzers and loading specimens as required.
  • Ensures completion and documentation of scheduled minor equipment maintenance.
  • Ensures work area is stocked with supplies daily. Monitors phlebotomy and processing inventory and orders supplies as appropriate. Receives and accurately documents laboratory supply shipments as needed.
  • Effectively performs a wide variety of clerical functions: answering phones, filing reports, typing, printing / mailing / faxing reports.
  • Effectively completes other duties as assigned to fulfill department needs.

Anticipated salary range: $74,400 – $111,615
