Texas Children’s Hospital is seeking a Phlebotomy Patient Care Technician I to perform phlebotomy for inpatients and outpatients and to order and process specimens in the laboratory. This role requires a high school diploma or GED and may prefer 1 year of phlebotomist experience.

The position supports a fast-paced laboratory workflow in a leading children's health system. The successful candidate will handle blood collection procedures, specimen transport, call-center communications, and quality

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick phlebotomy procedures including blood cultures, newborn screens, etc., as written in the manual.
  • Transports patient samples to the laboratory immediately after collection and before collecting the next patient.
  • Maintain Kanban system by stocking the phlebotomy tray or cart per policy.
  • Answer the telephone in a courteous, friendly manner and handle test requests and results.
  • Use the phone system to manage calls in the Call Center and Defect processing lines and log in when assigned.
  • Participate in proficiency testing to validate competency as required.
  • Investigate complaints and troubleshoot instrumentation and process problems.

Job description

We are searching for a Phlebotomy Patient Care Technician I -- someone who works well in a fast-paced setting. In this position, you will perform phlebotomy for inpatients and outpatients as well as order and process specimens in the laboratory.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 1 year phlebotomist experience preferred
Responsibilities:
  • Performs venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick phlebotomy procedures including blood cultures, newborn screens, d-xylose and glucose tolerances, etc. as written in the Central Receiving and Processing manual
  • Follows standard work processes and one-piece flow by transporting (either physically or via the tube station) patient samples to the laboratory immediately after collection; before collecting the next patient
  • Maintain Kanban system by using the approved phlebotomy tray or cart and stocking the cart per policy
  • Answers the telephone in a courteous, friendly manner; transfers calls, issues results, searches for tests performed, takes orders for test requests and uses the phone system effectively
  • Utilizes the phone system to manage phone calls in the Call Center and Defect processing lines ensures to log into the phone when assigned to the call center; utilize the auxiliary modes when needed
  • Performs and participates in proficiency testing programs to validate competency as required
  • Investigates complaints and troubleshoots instrumentation and process problems
