Job description

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Support Services, the individual collects specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood, urine, and nasal swabs for Covid testing. The role involves explaining safety protocols and procedures to patients, focusing on customer service, and performing clerical functions.

Responsibilities:

1. Collect blood using good judgment, reasonable care, and according to policies and procedures, including:

• Checking two patient identifiers to ensure a match between requisitions, labels, and patient ID cards.
• Using hand hygiene procedures as per unit guidelines.
• Selecting appropriate specimen collection equipment.
• Selecting suitable sites for blood collection.
• Tying tourniquet and preparing the site for venipuncture.
• Collecting specimens according to the order of draw.
• Ensuring adequate mixing of specimens in tubes.
• Labeling specimens in the presence of the patient.
• Packaging and transporting specimens.
• Monitoring the patient post-collection to ensure bleeding has stopped and the patient remains stable.
• Reviewing a standard checklist prior to collection, including potential adverse reactions such as fainting or latex allergy.

Maintain patient privacy and follow HIPAA guidelines.

With training or qualified competency review, provide EKG, clerical, and specimen transport functions.

With training or qualified competency review, provide pediatric and ancillary services related to phlebotomy.

Perform reception and clerical functions at the specimen collection center, including faxing, filing, answering phones, and managing requisitions.

Maintain supply inventory and complete monthly checks.

Satisfy annual continuing education requirements, including mandatory safety, HIPAA, and other training.

Collaborate effectively with team members, demonstrating good communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Pediatric phlebotomy experience required.
• Inpatient phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Graduation from a training program including phlebotomy skills with demonstrated competency preferred.
