Responsibilities:

  1. Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries promptly.
  2. Following proper patient identification procedures, procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick. Instruct patients on collection procedures as needed, and may collect samples other than blood.
  3. Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment, recognizing priorities to meet department needs and accept appropriate authority.
  4. Transport specimens from collection areas to the laboratory following safety procedures, including at off-site locations.
  5. Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies on procedures, quality control, safety, hand hygiene, and isolation precautions.
  6. Perform clerical duties using computer systems to manage test orders, data entry, and billing, ensuring sample and patient information accuracy.
  7. Inform technical staff or supervisors of any issues or unusual incidents.
  8. Perform arterial puncture following strict guidelines, if required.
  9. Monitor and maintain supplies, using materials cost-effectively.

Schedule: Rotating days, weekends, holidays, including early mornings, afternoons, and overnight shifts. May require offsite travel to outpatient labs.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program.
  • Preferred: At least 6 months of phlebotomy experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems is preferred.

Licensure and certifications:

  • Preferred: Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification.
  • Valid driver’s license with no violations (MVR/No Tier-D violations).
  • BLS/CPR Certification required within 30 days of employment.
  • Clearances: Act 31, Act 33, Act 34, Act 73 FBI Clearance, and FBI clearance.
