This position involves collecting blood from donors, visiting outpatient centers, and performing inpatient blood draws in the hospital.

Purpose:

This role is responsible for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients. The samples collected are used for laboratory testing essential for diagnosis and treatment. The Phlebotomist may also perform clerical and courier duties related to laboratory operations, working under the supervision of Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities:
  • Interact courteously and professionally with laboratory customers; respond promptly to inquiries.
  • Procure blood specimens via venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick following proper identification procedures. Instruct patients on collection procedures as needed.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and good judgment, prioritizing department needs.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory following safety protocols.
  • Adhere to hospital and laboratory policies on procedures, safety, and quality assurance.
  • Perform clerical duties, including data entry and test management using laboratory information systems.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents.
  • Report any unusual incidents to technical staff or supervisors.
  • Perform arterial puncture if required, following strict guidelines.
  • Manage supplies efficiently, maintaining inventory and using materials cost-effectively.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • At least 6 months of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Preferred: Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification.
  • Necessary: Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting, Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
