Job summary

TMC HealthCare is seeking a Float Phlebotomist to collect blood specimens at various sites in Southern Arizona. You will ensure proper patient identification, label specimens accurately, and maintain specimen integrity throughout processing.

Responsibilities include transporting specimens, data entry, and coordinating courier logistics. A valid AZ driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple clinics are required.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Experience: Six (6) months of experience collecting blood specimens.
  • Licensure: None required.

TMC HealthCare is Southern Arizona's regional nonprofit hospital system with Tucson Medical Center at its core. Each day staff comes to work to use their skills and expertise to improve the health of the entire community, from birth to the end of life.

Collects blood specimens and maintains the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test being performed. Processes, labels and distributes specimens for testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Properly identifies patient before obtaining specimen and labels the samples subsequent to the collection in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.

Performs any laboratory procedures, which must be accomplished at the time of collection.

Transports patients’ specimens to the laboratory, or makes arrangements for delivery of specimens to the laboratory in a timely manner.

Keys and verifies computer input data, assigns identification numbers, and produces specimen collection lists/labels and other computer reports.

Legibly documents failure-to-draw reasons according to laboratory policies and procedures.

Processes and delivers specimens received in the laboratory to the proper sections for analysis.

Resolves routine problems related to specimen collection and specimen processing.

Consults reference manuals to ensure specimens are properly packaged for send out.

Coordinates the dispatch log and courier requests for specimens being sent to outside laboratories.

Uses lab computer system to enter and retrieve pertinent patient information.

Consults with medical staff and other health care providers on matters relating to laboratory services.

Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides information to callers.

Sets up, calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on laboratory centrifuges.

Operates a personal computer, calculator, FAX machine, copy machine or related office machinery in performing assigned duties.

Requests and orders supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.

Assists in training new personnel in accordance with laboratory and phlebotomy department policies and procedures.

Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Collects Patients blood specimens at outside clinics/facilities. Prepares specimens for transport to the laboratory based on the testing requirements and specimen integrity i.e. decant, ambient, refrigerated or frozen. Create and verify the specimen batch lists for transport. A good driving record is needed as well as the use of a privately owned vehicle. The ability to travel to multiple sites when necessary. Valid AZ driver’s license.

Float Phlebotomist:

Work schedule hours will vary based on the site coverage. A good driving record is needed as well as the use of a privately owned vehicle. The ability to travel to multiple sites when necessary. LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Valid AZ driver’s license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months of experience collecting blood specimens.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: None required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the proper collection of blood specimens and proper chain of custody to ensure integrity of the specimens.
  • Skill in the collection of blood specimens.
  • Skill in organizing labels and work to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
