Job description

Job Summary

The Phlebotomy Technician performs the pre‑analytical phase of specimen preparation, obtaining blood specimens from patients, verifying labeling, and processing samples for laboratory testing while maintaining a professional, customer‑sensitive atmosphere.

Essential Functions

• Follows established hospital and departmental precautions and procedures to ensure patient and staff safety.
• Obtains blood specimens from patients in accordance with established procedures.
• Demonstrates workflow and procedure knowledge with management, co‑workers, new employees, inspectors, and visitors.
• Receives direction from the management team and participates in continuing education as appropriate.
• Maintains hand hygiene, uses patient identifiers, communicates effectively during hand‑offs, and applies proper personal protective equipment.

Job Responsibilities

• Verify correct specimen and labeling for test orders.
• Register and label tubes accurately.
• Centrifuge and aliquot specimens per department policy.
• Sort, store, and deliver laboratory specimens by department and requirements.
• Work with medical technologists and client services to resolve specimen problems.
• Answer telephones and provide assistance as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (required).
• Phlebotomy Technician (PT) certification preferred; ASCP Board of Certification (PBT(ASCP)) preferred.
• 3–5 years of experience in a hospital laboratory preferred.
• Internship or equivalent 0–1 year required.

Physical Requirements

• Standing, walking, and sitting frequently (34–66%).
• Lifting up to 35 lbs with assistance, carrying 20–35 lbs.
• Pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, and balancing occasionally.
• Climbing and crawling rarely; reaching and manipulating frequently.
• Visual and auditory functions constant or frequent.

Pay and Benefits

Location

1153 Centre Street, Onsite Work Location. Scheduled weekly hours: 20 hours, 5–9am, rotating weekends and holidays.
