Join Cleveland Clinic’s Martin South Hospital where research and surgery are advanced, technology is leading-edge, patient care is world class and caregivers are family. This 100-bed hospital serves the communities in and around Martin County. Here, you will work alongside passionate physicians, nurses and other caregivers in a family-oriented, supportive environment.

The Phlebotomist is an integral member of the medical laboratory team whose primary function is the collection of blood samples from patients. Phlebotomists also facilitate the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens (e.g. urine). Very often the patient’s only contact with the medical laboratory is the phlebotomist. Many patients, from children and teens to adults, often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. It takes a skilled Phlebotomist to put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens.

A caregiver in this position works 4:00am—12:30pm or 7:00am—3:30pm.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Collect blood, process specimens and perform reference laboratory processing in laboratory testing.
  • Perform related techniques, such as blood glucose tests and blood cultures.
  • Prepare samples for testing and manage specimens in the laboratory information system.
  • Prepare and ship reference laboratory specimens and resolve pending specimens and pending transports.
  • Monitor test ordering patients and requisitions to ensure compliance with outpatient laboratory testing.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Proficiency in blood collection from patients of all age groups

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • One year of college or equivalent
  • Six months of experience in phlebotomy and laboratory processing
