Job summary

OSS Health is seeking a Phlebotomist to accurately collect and label specimens, ensure patient identification, and communicate results to the health team. This role follows established policies and supports OSS Health goals.

This PRN position requires weekend coverage with FT PTO and holiday coverage. Candidates should have a high school diploma, phlebotomy skills, BLS certification, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; phlebotomy skills preferred.
  • Minimum of one year phlebotomy experience preferred; inpatient and outpatient settings desired.
  • Current BLS certification required or ability to obtain before independent work.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with minimal supervision; good time management.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and label specimens with proper patient identification.
  • Register patient information and maintain required documentation.
  • Transport specimens safely and promptly.
  • Review reports, identify errors, and correct as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safety policies.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Phlebotomist properly collects and labels specimens utilizing positive patient identification, processes and prepares specimens for transport as needed, produces reports for faxing or delivery as needed, and communicates appropriate information to the health team. The Phlebotomist is responsible for following established organization and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines of the practice. The Phlebotomist must ensure accurate registration of patients with all required information and may place patient lab orders. The Phlebotomist supports the philosophy and goals of OSS Health.

SCHEDULE:

PRN coverage needed for weekends, FT staff PTO, & holiday coverage

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Establishes and maintains strong positive relationships with patients, other OSS employees and the medical staff.
  • Greets all patients in a friendly manner, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.
  • Obtains all patient information in a private and confidential manner.
  • Registers accurate patient information and maintains all required documentation.
  • Places patient orders accurately.
  • Ensures retention of orders per regulatory requirements.
  • Identifies each patient accurately by verifying date of birth and spelling of last and first name.
  • Collects and labels specimens utilizing professional and accepted practices.
  • Processes specimens per laboratory procedure.
  • Transports specimens in a safe and timely manner.
  • Reviews all applicable computer reports for errors, resolving problems and making corrections.
  • Answers department telephone calls in an efficient & courteous manner.
  • Provides appropriate results and delivers accurate messages.
  • Maintains adequate supply levels for assigned areas, a safe environment following hospital policies and procedures and a high level of quality assurance.
  • Reports on all quality concerns according to policy.
  • Utilizes appropriate safety and infection control practices.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patients and all aspects of care.
  • Participate in educational activities, department meetings and quality initiatives.
  • Leads the education & documents the proficiency of staff that perform phlebotomy as secondary skill.
  • Maintains skills as demonstrated through competency testing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Health field education or previous experience in health-related field preferred.
  • Phlebotomy skills required; certification is preferred.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum of one year of experience in phlebotomy preferred; experience working in both an in-patient & outpatient setting highly desired.
  • Current certification in basic life support (BLS) required, or the ability to obtain before working independently with patients.
  • Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to plan and organize work appropriately.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.
  • Must have basic computer skills such as Microsoft office experience and the ability to navigate an EMR.
  • Must have professional and effective communication skills and be able to promote effective communication at all levels.
