Job summary

UPMC is seeking a Phlebotomist responsible for accurate phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients, under supervision of Medical Technologists. The role may include computer, courier, and clerical duties essential to laboratory operations.

You will identify patients, collect samples by venipuncture, heelstick, or fingerstick, and ensure proper handling and documentation. Off-site collections and safe transport are also part of the job, along with adherence to safety

Qualifications

• Ability to perform venipuncture and specimen collection as required.
• Maintain accuracy in labeling, demographics and test orders.
• Adhere to patient identification and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and professionally.
• Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick.
• Instruct patients on collection procedures when needed.
• Transport specimens to appropriate sections following safety procedures.
• Follow lab and hospital policies for procedures, quality control and safety.
• Enter demographic information and test orders into information systems accurately.
• Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as applicable.
• Inform staff or pathologists of unusual or problematic incidents.
• May perform arterial puncture following strict guidelines.
• Monitor and maintain supplies for daily functions.
