Job Responsibilities
  1. Performs specimen collection procedures, including venipuncture or skin puncture. Follows laboratory protocols for specimen handling, containers, transport, and patient preparation. Verifies information regarding test requested and patient identification according to laboratory protocol.
  2. Assists with routine clerical work including charging, crediting, and canceling of test procedures via computer system in a timely manner. Assists with registration and order entry for all patient phlebotomy specimens received in the laboratory, following laboratory protocol.
  3. Processes requisitions for disposition of reports to lab files, physician offices, home health agencies, and other appropriate locations. Provides services to meet the department’s customer needs, including accurate and timely information.
  4. Receives information for the laboratory department by answering phones and responding to front desk needs. Relays calls to various laboratory sections and/or management. Responds to all requests from department’s customers.
  5. Works with Johnson Memorial Health (JMH) computer systems, printers, scanners, etc., for orders/requisitions from multiple referral sources. Coordinates orders/requisitions according to time and location, following all laboratory procedures.
  6. Provides guidance for customers related to laboratory procedures and operations. Troubleshoots and provides effective customer service; notifies supervisor of issues.
  7. Promotes positive relations with co-workers through positive communication and continuous improvement efforts.
  8. Provides technical guidance for employees and customers regarding laboratory procedures and operations.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.
  10. Supports Johnson Memorial Health’s Mission and Values.
  11. Ensures all activities comply with laws, regulations, standards, and policies, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.
Education, Experience, and Training
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; coursework in Phlebotomy preferred; minimum of one year experience preferred.
  • Experience with office equipment and medical terminology preferred.
