This is a casual/per diem position located at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas. Training is approximately 4 weeks from 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday (full-time). There are two openings available:
- Evening shift (12:15pm-8:45pm) on varied days
- Night shift (10pm-6:30am) on varied nights
Shift times may vary based on need. Ideally, you would work more than five shifts per month. Ability to work every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday) is required, as well as rotating holidays. The ideal candidate will work several days per week and prioritize this position!

Support the laboratory manager in providing excellent patient care. Serve as an ambassador for the laboratory in interactions with patients, physicians, nurses, and visitors. Adhere to all safe patient handling standards, including pre-analytical safety procedures and infection control protocols. Participate in laboratory performance improvement activities, which include error identification, investigation, correction, documentation, and notification to relevant caregivers and lab leadership. Perform all functions as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician, including:
- Responding to life-critical situations such as Trauma, Stroke Codes, Code Sepsis, or Code Blues.
- Ensuring samples are collected following time-sensitive priorities (STAT, Timed, and routine).
- Observing aseptic technique and isolation procedures when indicated.
- Clarifying unclear orders, resolving discrepancies prior to sample collection, and documenting ABN necessity when needed.
- Identifying patients according to policy before sample collection and labeling samples accurately.
- Performing phlebotomy via venipuncture or capillary puncture, observing age-specific techniques.
- Preserving sample integrity by timely delivery to the laboratory.
- Processing specimens and following instructions for centrifugation, aliquoting, transport, and storage.
- Following HAZMAT regulations when packing samples for transport.
- Performing crucial pre-analytic and analytic test steps under supervision.
- Demonstrating proficiency with standard office equipment, computers, and laboratory information systems.
- Adhering to safety protocols.
