Job summary

Northwell Health is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to collect blood samples across adult, pediatric, and infant patients in an ambulatory lab setting. You will ensure specimen quality and patient comfort, following established standards and safety practices.

You will interpret orders, identify patients, label specimens, and deliver them to the laboratory while maintaining strict aseptic technique and adherence to Pre-Admission Testing procedures.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Current Phlebotomy Technician Certification preferred; additional certifications welcome.
• 0–5 years of technical experience required.

Responsibilities

• Assess the site for blood collection, select equipment, draw blood from adults, children, and infants, and deliver specimens to the lab.
• Interpret and verify orders, identify patients, determine quantity needed, and label specimens per policy.
• Monitor patient condition during phlebotomy and restock supplies.
• Follow standard precautions using aseptic technique and protective gear, and manage isolation precautions in ambulatory labs.
• Advise patients on specimen collection (blood, urine, sputum, stool, nasal swabs) and route specimens correctly.
• Identify and report problems to supervision.
• Restock laboratory supplies.
• Determine the type of blood work needed for elective pre-op patients per policy.
• Perform related duties; all listed responsibilities are essential under the ADA.

Collects blood from patients following established standards and practices. Assures the quality of the specimen. Assumes the responsibility for the safety and comfort of patient.

Job Responsibility

• 1.Assesses the physical condition of the site to be used for blood collection; selects appropriate equipment for the chosen method of collection; draws blood from adult, pediatric and infant patients; conducts appropriate specimen delivery to laboratory


• 2.Interprets and verifies orders including patient identification; calculates quantity needed for diagnostic study; labels specimen according to policy.


• 3.Assesses physical condition of the patient during phlebotomy and takes appropriate action; maintains phlebotomy supply levels.


• 4.Follows approved standard precautions including, but not limited to the use of aseptic techniques, protective gear, discard of contaminated equipment, and other isolation precautions, as directed; follows administrative guidelines in the operation of the Ambulatory Lab, Pre-Admission Testing.


• 5.Instructs patients regarding collection of blood, urine, sputum and stool specimens, nasal swabs; processes specimens to proper area of lab.


• 6.Identifies and communicates problems to appropriate supervision

Job Qualification

• 1.High School Diploma or equivalent required.


• 2.Current Phlebotomy Technician Certification preferred plus specialized certifications as needed.
