Job Summary

To support technical/clerical personnel of the Laboratory Department.

Essential Functions
  1. CLERICAL DUTIES:
    1. Filing appropriately in a timely manner.
    2. Answering phone requests from floors, Windemere, or Physician offices.
    3. Faxing appropriately to outside agencies and offices.
    4. Requests tests accurately and completely through Epic.
    5. Logging in outside laboratory request and result.
    6. Delivering results to appropriate areas.
    7. Performs duties as requested by technical staff.
    8. Insuring requests contain proper information to be submitted to Accounts Receivable.
    9. Maintains Standing Order List.
    10. Maintains supplies and documents for Drug Testing Accounts.
  2. PHLEBOTOMY DUTIES:
    1. Recognizing appropriate collection tubes for requested testing.
    2. Good Venipuncture technique.
    3. Asking for help when venipuncture is missed.
    4. Good capillary collection technique, i.e., fingerstick, heelstick.
    5. Good pediatric venipuncture technique.
    6. Recognition of appropriate amounts to be drawn for requested testing, including microsampling.
    7. Looks up “send out” test requirements and processes the specimens appropriately.
    8. Communicating to testing personnel “URGENT PRIORITIES”, i.e., STAT, ASAP, or call results.
    9. Proper administration of Glucola, Xylose for tolerance/challenge testing.
    10. Re-stocking phlebotomy room and participating in inventory control.
    11. Proper collection of urine for outpatient drug screens (NIDA STD’s).
    12. Delivers specimens to testing area in a timely manner.
    13. Demonstrates ability to serve patients in various age groups, pediatrics to geriatrics.
  3. TECHNICAL DUTIES:
    1. Performs Simplate Bleeding Time tests.
    2. Performs all duties to support the testing personnel as allowed by CLIA 88.
    3. Trains and guides new staff members.
    4. Performs capillary INR testing.
  4. REGISTRATION DUTIES:
    1. Ensures patient confidentiality prior to interviewing patient.
    2. Obtains all relevant information and enters into Epic.
    3. Ensures that diagnoses appear on laboratory requisition.
    4. Compiles and quantitates total lab outpatient volume at the end of each day.
    5. Performs insurance verification for all appropriate patients.
  5. LEAD DUTIES:
    1. Plans activities with the Laboratory Manager in direct support of patient care requirements.
    2. Provides support to other phlebotomy technicians in the department.
    3. Troubleshoots and assists the Laboratory Manager in resolving equipment problems and failures.
Qualifications

Education Requirements:
Minimum: High School diploma
Preferred: Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program. Preferred: CNA, LPN, RN and/or appropriate healthcare certification that requires formal schooling.

Experience:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Utilization of OSHA standards and Infection Control. - Phlebotomy experience preferred. - Two years’ experience in health care, preferably Laboratory/Hospital, preferred. - Two years’ experience with direct patient care preferred.
