Penobscot Valley Hospital is looking for a Phlebotomist to work per diem in our Laboratory Department.
This is an “as needed” position utilized to cover gaps in coverage including vacations, leaves of absences, and other instances of unfilled shifts. Per diem employees are required to work a minimum of 3 shifts within a 3-month period.
Position: non-exempt, non-union, hourly rate.
Perform blood collection procedures using a variety of techniques. Interact with patients. Process orders through information system and label specimens. Perform clerical functions and provide technical training to students. Perform waived testing.
JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Accurately transcribe provider test orders.
2. Process standing and verbal orders.
3. Obtain Advance Beneficiary Notice if required.
4. Positively identify patient.
5. Collect blood specimens in appropriate tubes using technique appropriate to age and physical state of patient.
6. Annual in-service on handling patient emergencies.
7. Instruct / direct collection of urine specimens using technique appropriate to test ordered.
8. Determine acceptability of specimens and rejects per policy.
9. Give collection requirements to patients and providers.
10. Minimally process specimens tested in-house to optimize viability.
11. Process referral specimens up to point of shipment.
12. Stock supplies within and maintains a neat and orderly work area.
13. Process outgoing laboratory reports.
14. File laboratory reports and requisitions.
15. Operate CPSI system within scope of responsibility.
16. Perform urinalysis dipstick testing.
17. Perform urine pregnancy test screen testing.
18. Perform occult blood testing.
19. Perform other waived testing as approved by the laboratory manager.
20. Instruct and observe students in collection techniques.
21. Orients new employees through responsible areas.
22. Uses personal protective equipment during collection, including gloves.
23. Appropriately use BD safety needles and Point-Lok device.
24. Immediately dispose capped needle and holder.
25. Appropriate use of Sharps containers and red bag waste.
26. Observe, report, and eliminate safety hazards within work area.
27. Follow safety and exposure control procedures.
28. Maintains BLS Certification.
29. Pull compliance data and forward to lab manager.
30. Renew monthly reference lab bills for accuracy and forward to lab manager.
Quality Improvement
Actively participates in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, actively supports and implements Department-specific Quality improvement initiatives and projects, recommends process improvement as appropriate, reports any quality issues in service delivery and consistently commits to a focus on quality improvement and organizational excellence.
Emergency Management
As an employee of Penobscot Valley Hospital, the position has an inherent role to care for our community members when in need. To this regard, the incumbent will be expected to participate in emergency/disaster preparedness planning and drills as requested. When called upon during a real life disaster/emergency event, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the Hospital’s response to this event, within the scope of professional and personal ability to do so.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent required.
National phlebotomy certification preferred but not required.
BLS certification required.
