Job summary

St. Elizabeth Healthcare is seeking a part-time phlebotomist to safely collect venous samples from adults, children, and infants across Edgewood and nearby sites. The role requires accurate order interpretation, data entry in the HIS, and adherence to compliance processes.

Responsibilities include patient interaction using the AIDET model, specimen handling, and assisting with logistics across locations. A valid driver’s license and a high school diploma are required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Driver’s License and insurance coverage required to work at Edgewood facility.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information System (HIS) and phlebotomy procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills are expected.
  • Minimum 6 months of related experience including customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients and performs venipunctures and specimen collections.
  • Evaluates orders and ensures accurate data entry in HIS.
  • Safely collects quality samples per policies and procedures.
  • Maintains phlebotomy work areas in a clean, stocked, and orderly state.
  • May cover multiple locations; travel by courier car as needed.
  • Participates in continuing education and ICARE principles.

Job Summary:

Safely and accurately performs venipunctures, arterial and capillary specimen collections as requested in adults, children and infants. Includes interpretation of physician orders and insuring all requests are accurately and completely processed in the information system. Completes all required compliance processes.

Job Description:

(Float position serving up to 9 locations)

  • Greets patients using the AIDET (PHLEBOT) model, giving instructions and directions as necessary to provide quality patient experiences. Obtains and processes patient identification and insurance information to ensure quality services and timely billing, including completion of forms required by third-party payers.

  • Evaluates physician orders for type of specimens, time of draw and any specific specimen handling requirements; place and/or release orders as necessary from the HIS ensuring that orders from the appropriate physician and expected service date are verified; obtain labels and organize work. Communicates with physician offices to obtain diagnosis coding information and resolve any issues.

  • Safely collects quality samples according to laboratory policies and procedures (for the accurate and timely completion of testing). Uses a variety of collection devices/sharps to obtain specimens. Process collected specimens for testing and transport by centrifuging, aliquot, store per temperature requirements as necessary to ensure specimen integrity. Process additional specimens (fluids, urine, swab, etc.) as required for quality standards.

  • Clean, organize, maintain and rotate stock in the phlebotomy work areas to maintain a safe and orderly environment.

  • Must have knowledge of collection and ordering requirements for reference labs as well as other specialty testing labs. Demonstrates knowledge of Laboratory Compliance policies and procedures as well as internal mandatory computer based learning modules.

  • Required to collect specimens at other healthcare facilities as needed. Required to cover at other laboratory sites across the system as needed. Utilizes courier car as necessary. Must meet required safe driver standards.

  • Attends in-services and continuing education seminars to enhance personal and professional growth

  • Enhances professional growth and development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by participation in continuing education and in-service training.

  • Implements ICARE principles using communication skills and human relations to promote quality patient care and productive working environment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • High School graduate or GED

  • Valid Driver’ License/Meet Medical Centers Insurance requirement (necessary to work at the Edgewood facility due to the need for phlebotomists to cover nursing home draws and drive a laboratory vehicle)
