Job description

Overview

The Lab Phlebotomist – Ambulatory performs venipuncture, skin puncture, EKG, point of care testing, and registration in the ambulatory setting. Demonstrates excellent communication and patient care skills.

Qualifications

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA). Education: H.S. Diploma/GED (Required). Work Experience: [Specify if applicable].

Responsibilities

  1. Performs routine and complex blood drawing procedures including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.
  2. Verifies patient identification and specimen labeling to ensure quality.
  3. Performs point-of-care testing, specimen processing, and EKGs in the ambulatory setting.
  4. Handles patient registration and enters lab orders into the lab computer system.
  5. Serves patients from newborn to geriatric across multiple labs, collecting blood specimens, providing collection instructions, and performing EKGs and point of care tests.
  6. Works approximately 50-200 patients daily, with scheduled Saturday shifts and call shifts.
  7. Uses two identifiers (Name/DOB or Name/Medical Record Number) for patient and specimen identification.
  8. Performs venipunctures with appropriate needles and systems, including specialized kits for commercial labs or research.
  9. Collects blood cultures, ensuring skin decontamination and proper collection techniques.
  10. Performs point of care tests such as iStat, Diastix, and Quicktox, troubleshooting as needed.
  11. Processes specimens according to test requirements, including storage and handling protocols.
  12. Performs 12-lead EKGs using GE MAC 5500 HD.
  13. Participates in proficiency testing, re-education, and maintains compliance with policies and procedures.
  14. Completes required continuing education and maintains certification.
  15. Communicates effectively with internal and external customers.
  16. Works efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
