Job Summary

The Research Phlebotomist is responsible for supporting research programs at the Brigham Multiple Sclerosis Center. Research responsibilities include performing phlebotomy, processing blood samples (centrifuge), proper packaging of samples for transport, and maintaining inventory. The Research Phlebotomist may be required to perform other tasks as needed or requested by the Practice Manager, Director of Clinical Research Operations, Medical Director, and/or Director of the Brigham Multiple Sclerosis Center.

Essential Functions

  1. Draw blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research. May explain the procedure to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions.
  2. Dispose of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
  3. Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods.
  4. Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
  5. Draw blood from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods.
  6. Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrates the skills and competence to perform/prepare patients for venipuncture/stick.
  2. Maintains the blood drawing area clean and organized.
  3. Follows all Infection Control Guidelines throughout the venipuncture/stick procedure.
  4. Follows Hospital Hand Hygiene policy between all procedures and patients.
  5. Works with research laboratory staff to optimize protocols for research blood draws.
  6. Completes research phlebotomy checklists, updates shared calendar, and manages all necessary paperwork.
  7. Uses centrifuge to spin samples and aliquot samples as required per protocol.
  8. Works with research laboratory staff to pull research samples from the freezer for assays.
  9. Works with research laboratory staff to pull research samples for shipment to collaborators and central trial sites.
  10. Completes IATA training for dangerous goods transport.
  11. Packages samples using ice or dry ice as appropriate per protocol.
  12. Retrieves orders from EPIC and obtains clinical blood samples if ordered.
  13. Retrieves orders from EPIC and obtains clinical urine samples if ordered.
  14. Maintains and stocks phlebotomy inventory.
  15. Orders research, medical, and office supplies.
  16. Routinely inspects tubes and other supplies for expiration dates and discards as appropriate.
  17. Demonstrates professional behavior and excellent customer service skills at all times.
  18. Effectively interacts with management, co-workers and clinical and research staff to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.
  19. Effectively interacts with patients and patients’ families to reduce stress and anxiety.
  20. Communicates in a professional and effective manner at all times.
  21. Familiar with Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and complies with BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures.
  22. Performs all other duties as directed or assigned by the Practice Manager, Director of Clinical Research Operations, Medical Director, and/or Director of the Brigham Multiple Sclerosis Center.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent required.

Experience: 1-2 years experience in phlebotomy required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Must demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills.
  2. Must be organized, able to multitask and able to adapt to changing demands.
  3. Must be able to work effectively and collaboratively with management, physicians, nurses, research staff, clinical staff, and others.
  4. Must maintain annual competencies related to practice protocols.
  5. Must attend mandatory annual in-services.
  6. Must understand the overall goals and systems of research and clinical practice.
  7. Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
  8. Knowledge to select appropriate vacutainer tubes and volumes for test(s) requested.
  9. Physically be able to stand and walk for long periods of time (90% of the day) and transport supplies and specimens as required.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively with all phlebotomy team members, clinicians and other hospital staff.
  11. Some computer skills necessary for training on the use of E-mail and hospital applications as required.

Working Conditions

  1. Extremely busy research and ambulatory care environment.
  2. Exposure to needle sticks and punctures from other sharps.
  3. Exposure to patients with infectious diseases. Must take appropriate precautions according to Infection Control and laboratory guidelines.
  4. Work entails walking, kneeling, bending, and some light lifting.
