Overview

The Phlebotomist II receives orders for laboratory testing, collects blood from patients of any age or status, and issues appropriate paperwork to the Floyd lab or outside for processing. He/she maintains the laboratory in an efficient working state and performs lab procedures while ensuring quality control.

Qualifications

  • Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent, Completion of a formal training program in Phlebotomy, Completion of departmental clinical evaluation checklist
  • Education Preferred: None
  • Licensures or Certifications Required: PBT (ASCP) or equivalent
  • Experience Required: At least one year experience

Responsibilities

Role Specific Essential Duties:

  • Obtain high-quality specimens by venipuncture and capillary procedures, perform special procedures as needed, and collect blood cultures with low contamination rates.
  • Ensure timely specimen collection, establish positive patient identification, follow quality standards, and keep the collection area stocked and clean.
  • Process specimens accurately, handle cancellations properly, and log collection times into the lab system.
  • Maintain good working relationships, display professionalism, and adhere to hospital policies on attendance and punctuality.
  • Attend meetings, assist new employees, and utilize resources effectively.

Working Conditions

Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and other hazards typical in a clinical environment. Physical demands include handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity, standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Must respond to alarms and alerts within normal vision and hearing ranges. Work may involve stress due to volume and irregular hours.
