Job summary

Actalent is seeking a Phlebotomist II to perform venipunctures and specimen collection in a fast-paced hospital or lab environment. You will label, process, and store samples, explain procedures to patients, and ensure orders are accurate and compliant with safety standards.

The role emphasizes accurate specimen handling, documentation, and teamwork, with a typical day drawing blood for about 25 patients and following strict regulatory guidelines.

Qualifications

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• At least 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Overall 24 years of work experience.
• Proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
• Ability to collect and handle specimens accurately according to established procedures.
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow physicians orders and laboratory protocols.
• Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and professional manner.
• Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against physician orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity.
• Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol for each test.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain thorough documentation of all activities.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians orders to ensure proper test selection and specimen handling.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and quality standards.
• Attend annual department trainings and remain current with procedural and regulatory updates.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
• Assist with troubleshooting routine issues and make workflow recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
