Job Description

The main function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role is integral in ensuring efficient specimen collection and processing within a healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and carry out decontamination procedures.
  • Update patient information and collect specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously, including urine or fecal collections as required.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Understand and follow all physician orders accurately.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and ensure correct labeling and processing of specimens.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperatures.

Essential Skills

  • Phlebotomy certification
  • Proficiency in blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection
  • Experience in specimen processing and centrifuging
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Customer service skills

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience required

  • Ability to manage medical records and perform capillary puncture

Work Environment

The position operates in a Patient Service Center (PSC) with a busy location. The phlebotomist will be on their feet most of the time and is expected to perform approximately 50 draws daily. The schedule is from 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with every other Saturday from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The phlebotomist will work as part of a team of four, the role requires expertise in drawing from pediatric to geriatric patients.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.
