Job summary

Bryan Health is seeking a phlebotomist to collect blood from hospital patients, including adults and pediatrics, and to perform basic point-of-care testing as needed.

You will maintain accuracy in demographics and specimen data entry, communicate with hospital staff, and uphold safety protocols while delivering compassionate patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Commit to the hospital mission and uphold core values.
  • Maintain competency in phlebotomy procedures and follow policies.
  • Collect blood from adult hospital inpatients using venipuncture or capillary methods.
  • Assist with pediatric collections under supervision.
  • Complete mandatory safety training and follow guidelines.
  • Complete tasks accurately and in line with lab standards.
  • Perform limited point-of-care testing.
  • Enter patient data accurately into the computer systems.
  • Answer calls and respond to non-technical questions from staff/patients.
  • Provide compassionate patient care using required customer service practices.
  • Pursue professional development through seminars and affiliations.
  • Participate in meetings and department projects.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Performs blood sample collection from hospital patients for analysis or other medical purposes.


PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


  1. 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

  2. 2. *Maintains competency and proficiency with respect to all phlebotomy procedures; maintains awareness of all laboratory policy, technical and procedural changes.

  3. 3. *Performs blood collection from adult patients using appropriate capillary collection or venipuncture technique from hospital inpatients.

  4. 4. *Under supervision performs blood collection from children and infant patients using appropriate capillary collection or venipuncture technique from hospital inpatients.

  5. 5. *Completes all mandatory safety training and follows all safety guidelines per written protocols.

  6. 6. *Completes assigned tasks accurately and timely, adhering to all laboratory standards, policies and procedures.

  7. 7. Performs limited patient testing on point of care instruments.

  8. 8. Accurately performs computer entry of patient demographic and testing information including specimen data collected by laboratory or other hospital staff.

  9. 9. Answers telephone calls and responds to non-technical questions from hospital staff and/or patients.

  10. 10. *Provides patient care with compassion and empathy utilizing mandatory customer service tactics as required by policy/procedure.

  11. 11. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

  12. 12. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

  13. 13. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  1. 1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.

  2. 2. Knowledge of phlebotomy methods and practice standards.

  3. 3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

  4. 4. Skill in the use and maintenance of general phlebotomy and laboratory instruments and equipment.

  5. 5. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  6. 6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

  7. 7. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  8. 8. Ability to provide solutions to problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  9. 9. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

  10. 10. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

  11. 11. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

  12. 12. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalency required. Prior phlebotomy experience preferred. Phlebotomy course completion preferred.
