Qualifications

• 1-4 years of experience as a Phlebotomist in an outpatient, patient service center, or hospital setting required.
• Experience with blood draw, venipuncture, sample collection, and specimen processing.

Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate.
• Update patient information.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Understand all physicians' orders fully.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport.
• Store specimen samples according to required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labeling and following procedures necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
  
  

Essential Skills

Work Environment

Work hours are 8am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. The position is based in a medium-sized Patient Service Center, where the worker is expected to stand for the majority of their shift. The phlebotomist will work alongside other phlebotomists and team members, with an initial week of orientation training. The role includes collections and specimens from pediatric to geriatric patients.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
