Overview

The Lab Phlebotomist - Hospital performs venipuncture and skin puncture in the hospital setting. Demonstrates excellent communication and patient care skills.

Qualifications
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Education: High School Diploma/GED (Required)
  • Work Experience: 6 months phlebotomy experience or completion of Carle Phlebotomy in Training Program
Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of routine and complex blood drawing procedures including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.
  • Verify patient identification and specimen labeling to ensure quality.
  • Maintain appropriate response times to stat and timed orders.
  • Participate as part of the trauma and code response teams.
  • Collect blood specimens from approximately 400 patients each 24‑hour period in emergency, inpatient and outpatient areas.
  • Work every other weekend and 3‑4 holidays per year and cover 1‑2 call shifts each week.
  • Accurately identify patients and specimens using two identifiers: name/date of birth or name/medical record number.
  • Perform venipunctures using vacutainer, syringe, or butterfly needle system.
  • Complete complex blood collection kits for commercial laboratories and research.
  • Follow hospital protocols for blood cultures, including Chloroprep skin decontamination and proper collection of Bactec blood culture bottles.
  • Respond to STAT tests within 15 minutes and timed tests within a 30‑minute window around the designated collection time.
  • Collect initial blood specimens for trauma patients.
  • Participate in accreditation and proficiency testing, annual performance competencies, and ongoing re‑education or retraining.
  • Maintain familiarity with laboratory policies and procedures, review documentation as required, and complete continuing education to maintain certification.
  • Communicate information with internal and external customers in an accurate and professional manner.
  • Work effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
Compensation & Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $18.65 per hour – $30.21 per hour. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
