Job description

Hours: 8:30 pm - 5:00 am, 9:00 pm - 5:30 am

The Phlebotomist II is responsible for performing a wide range of tasks to provide high-quality specimens for testing and accurate information for laboratories and clients. The role involves independently performing venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates to adults. Responsibilities include obtaining blood specimens, processing them for analysis, using computer systems for registration, billing, and specimen accessioning, and demonstrating interpersonal skills to explain procedures and comfort patients.

  1. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  2. Ensure proper collection requirements are met.
  3. Accurately perform accessioning procedures for specimen identification.
  4. Recognize and resolve discrepancies appropriately.
  5. Evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability.
  6. Address or escalate problems as needed.
  7. Conduct testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control of Point of Care instruments.
  8. Handle reagents and supplies following protocols.
  9. Follow reporting procedures and document issues and solutions.
  10. Navigate multiple computer applications effectively.
  11. Adhere to policies and compliance standards.
  12. Provide phlebotomy services for various settings, including in-home visits for homebound patients.
  13. Complete initial and ongoing competency exams.

Work is performed in a clinical environment. The role requires compliance with organizational policies and procedures. Additional departmental competencies will be part of orientation and considered essential for job performance.

Qualifications for Phlebotomist I, II, and III will be considered for appropriate compensation. Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • Experience as a nursing assistant, CNA, MA, CMA, or similar roles is considered.
  • Military medical experience is valued.
  • Phlebotomist I: less than 1 year of experience.
  • Phlebotomist II: 1-2 years of experience or graduation from Geisinger's Phlebotomy Program.
  • Phlebotomist III: meets Phlebotomist II qualifications, plus ASCP certification and preceptor training.
