Job description

Job Title: Phlebotomist II

Phlebotomist II is responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of tasks to provide high-quality specimens for testing and accurate information for laboratories and clients. They can independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates to adults. Responsibilities include obtaining blood specimens, processing specimens, using computer systems for registration, billing, and specimen accessioning, and communicating effectively with patients to explain procedures and provide comfort.

  1. Performs venipunctures and skin punctures according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  2. Ensures correct collection requirements and specimen identification.
  3. Accurately performs accessioning and resolves discrepancies.
  4. Evaluates specimen quality and acceptability.
  5. Performs testing, troubleshooting, and quality control on Point of Care instruments.
  6. Manages reagents and supplies per protocols.
  7. Follows reporting procedures and documents issues and solutions.
  8. Accesses multiple computer applications as needed.
  9. Adheres to policies, including compliance standards.
  10. Provides phlebotomy services in various settings, including in-home visits for homebound patients.
  11. Completes competency exams as required.

Work is performed in a clinical environment, requiring compliance with organizational policies. Additional skills may be required based on departmental orientation.
