Job description

Job Description: Phlebotomist II

Phlebotomist II has experience and can independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults, to obtain blood specimens. They possess knowledge of processing specimens for analysis and can utilize computer systems to register patients, facilitate billing, accession laboratory specimens, and provide information. The Phlebotomist II is responsible for performing a wide range of tasks to ensure the highest quality of specimens for testing and accurate client information, supporting goals of quality patient care and satisfaction. A key duty is to make patients feel relaxed and protected during blood collection, explaining the process and maintaining a comforting attitude to create an amiable environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  2. Ensure proper collection requirements are met.
  3. Accurately accession specimens and ensure positive identification.
  4. Demonstrate good problem-solving skills and resolve discrepancies.
  5. Evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability.
  6. Perform testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control on Point-of-Care instruments.
  7. Handle reagents and supplies following protocols.
  8. Follow established reporting procedures via computerized, verbal, and manual methods.
  9. Record and report issues and solutions appropriately.
  10. Access and navigate multiple computer applications and systems.
  11. Adhere to organizational policies, including compliance policies.
  12. Provide phlebotomy coverage for various settings, including in-home visits for homebound patients.
  13. Successfully complete initial and ongoing competency exams.

Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. The role requires compliance with all policies and procedures. This position is unionized.

  • Availability for varied hours, on-call, weekends, and holidays.
  • Travel as needed.
  • Completion of competency exams.
