Job Description

This is a full-time, 36 hours per week, nursing home phlebotomy position for the area surrounding Winfield and Wheaton in the far Western suburbs.

Geriatric Phlebotomy Experience Strongly Preferred.

Must be able to work 5am - 1:30pm, including every other weekend.

The Phlebotomist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Phlebotomist provides expert phlebotomy services and must demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills. The phlebotomist must have the ability to function as part of a highly effective team that consistently puts “Patients First”.

The Phlebotomist is responsible for venipuncture collection and specimen processing. Other responsibilities include order entry in multiple systems, verification of test result receipt, patient information retrieval, and lab reception/clerical duties.

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age-related standards and departmental policies.
  2. Demonstrates AIDET model and optimizes patient safety to reduce errors.
  3. Receives and reviews physician orders; ensures completeness and enters accurate orders.
  4. Provides appropriate post-phlebotomy patient care.
  5. Processes specimens promptly to maintain sample integrity, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging.
  6. Records refrigerator temperatures and QC/QA data; reports issues accordingly.
  7. Understands equipment operation and maintenance; follows up on outstanding orders and communicates status.
  8. Notifies Laboratory and/or Physician of specimen procurement issues.
  9. Maintains a safe work environment, adhering to biohazard waste procedures.
  10. Performs clerical duties such as order entry, result verification, patient info retrieval, and inventory management.
  11. Uses resources efficiently and participates in cost-reduction efforts.
  12. Completes continuing education and competency assessments.
  13. Demonstrates teamwork and professional interactions.
  14. Applies critical thinking and sound judgment.
  15. Adheres to ethical business practices and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification from a recognized organization or training, or one year of healthcare phlebotomy experience, or CMA certification.

Preferred:

  • Experience with diverse patient populations.
  • Experience processing lab specimens and using centrifuges.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
