Job summary

Northeast Georgia Health System is seeking a Phlebotomist I/II to perform blood collection and related duties across neonatal to geriatric patients. The role supports the Lab Section Supervisor and ensures safe, accurate specimen handling in a busy clinical setting.

Qualified candidates will have a phlebotomy certificate, a high school diploma or GED, and at least 3 years of phlebotomy experience; strong communication and computer skills are essential.

Responsibilities

About the Role:

Job Summary Performs the duties of a Phlebotomist I plus the added responsibilities that are designated by the Section Supervisor. The Phlebotomist II must maintain sufficient clinical and expertise to function as an assistant to the Laboratory Section Supervisor and perform those duties in the Section Supervisor's absence. Also, is expected to display initiative, excellent verbal and written communication skills and be proactive in dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities and problem resolution in the department. The leadership role of the Phlebotomist II requires this self -motivated individual to work closely with the Lab Section Supervisor, Lab Administration, Pathologists and to be well respected by their peers and other co-workers. This position will care for patients in the neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups. Employee performs clinical duties in accordance with population specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined in policy and procedures.

Minimum Job Qualifications

Licensure or other certifications: Successful completion of a certificate in phlebotomy through an approved certification organization: ASCP, National Phlebotomy Association, American Medical Technologist, National Performance Specialist, National Healthcareer Association.

Educational Requirements: High School Diploma or GED

Minimum Experience: 3 years of phlebotomy experience including pediatric, geriatric and capillary collections.

  • Performs Phlebotomy Technique in a professional manner.

  • Correctly performs micro-collection and other special collection techniques.
  • Discerns Phlebotomy Techniques according to condition of the patient.
  • Follows all safety guidelines to ensure the safety of the patient.

  • Works well with other departments to coordinate special collections.
  • Delivers clinical specimens efficiently and effectively to the laboratory.
  • Performs effectively and efficiently in complex emergency situations such as multiple trauma or disaster.
  • P repossesses clinical specimens for analytical testing.
  • Determines the validity and integrity of clinical specimens to ensure quality test results.
  • Operates a centrifuge properly.
  • Understands and applies proper technique according to specimen requirements.
  • Understands what tests are performed in the various Lab Departments.
  • Interacts with other departments in a positive manner to resolve identified problems with a clinical specimen.
  • Is familiar with and correctly possesses the specialty tests that are sent to various laboratories.
  • Is familiar with all laboratory reference accounts.
  • Performs customer service functions for those accounts. (Provides information, routes supplies, etc.)
  • Accurately performs drug screen collections following chain of custody protocols.
  • Any errors made will result in retraining per the standards.
  • May perform receptionist duties for departmental visitors and maintains communications in an appropriate manner.
  • Answers telephone within three rings in a courteous manner, identifying self and department at all times.
  • Assists callers, department visitors in any way possible, maintaining complete and accurate messages.
  • Accessions outpatients in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for laboratory patient data and general clerical support.
  • Accurately codes laboratory orders from the nursing unit into laboratory information system with no more than one error per month.
  • Maintains commitment to continued professional growth and development through continued education and annual competency assessments.
  • Assists in training new employees or students through: Demonstrating proper techniques.
  • Assisting with venipuncture when needed.
  • Assist with training or observation for chain of custody collection as requested.
  • Functions effectively as a preceptor of students or new staff as assigned.
  • Directs clinical training to enhance learning, achieve specific objectives, and promote skill mastery.
