About the Role

A Phlebotomist I provides customer service and skilled specimen collections, ensuring the validity and integrity of clinical specimens. Performs blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups, executes doctors’ orders correctly, and handles special and legal specimens. Works in a fast‑paced environment exposed to biohazards. Performs clinical duties in accordance with population‑specific guidelines and National Patient Safety Goals.

Preferred Job Qualifications

• Preferred Licensure or other certifications: Certification in phlebotomy preferred through an approved certification organization (ASCP, National Phlebotomy Association, American Medical Technologist, National Performance Specialist, National Healthcareer Association).

• Preferred Experience: Previous laboratory experience as a lab assistant.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

• Conduct phlebotomy techniques professionally and present the lab positively to the public.
• Perform routine venipuncture, micro‑collection, and other special collection techniques.
• Adapt phlebotomy technique to patient condition and safety guidelines.
• Coordinate with other departments for special collections and deliver specimens efficiently to the laboratory.
• Operate centrifuge and apply proper techniques according to specimen requirements.li>
• Process outpatients in a timely manner and code laboratory orders with high accuracy.
• Handle complex emergency situations such as multiple trauma or disaster efficiently.
• Resolve specimen-related problems and route to appropriate personnel.
• Ensure specimen integrity and complete paperwork for investigational studies.
• Maintain quality assurance logs for phlebotomy and specimen processing departments.
• Prioritize work to meet turnaround requirements set by Laboratory Administration.
• Regularly review patient lists to ensure timely sample collection.
• Perform drug screen collections following chain‑of‑custody protocols.
