Job description

Job Title: Phlebotomist

The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

Job Summary

Provides basic skills necessary for the collection of blood samples through skin puncture and venipuncture techniques.

Essential Job Functions
  • Order and maintain laboratory supplies; provide input into the acquisition of laboratory equipment.
  • Collect blood samples using skin (micro) puncture and venipuncture methods.
  • Identify patients according to hospital protocol prior to specimen collection.
  • Prepare all specimens for transport and testing, including maintaining the daily lab manifest.
  • Participate in hospital and clinic collection rounds.
  • Maintain lab reminders to ensure continuity of care.
  • Keep blood drawing trays and equipment clean and well-organized.
  • Maintain appropriate sharps inventory for security and medical handling.
  • Prepare monthly reports.
  • Adhere to internal controls and reporting structures established for the department.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Equipment

Standard blood sample collection equipment.

Work Environment
  • May be exposed to occupational hazards such as communicable diseases, harmful chemicals, and/or disoriented or combative patients.
  • May require travel.
  • The work environment is located within a prison, jail, or juvenile detention center.
  • Security clearance is required; pre-employment drug testing is also required.
Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Salary is commensurate with relevant work experience.
