Job summary

Bay Area Hospital is seeking a part-time Phlebotomist Clerical Support to obtain blood specimens from patients of all ages in a courteous and professional manner. The role combines phlebotomy duties with clerical responsibilities within the Laboratory.

The candidate will operate the Lab Information System, ensure proper specimen labeling, and assist with training and safety protocols while providing excellent patient service.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
  • Registered as a Certified Laboratory Phlebotomist with a national certification agency or ASCP, or show proof of pending recertification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Positively identify patient before obtaining specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Collect blood specimens from patients of all ages using correct tubes for testing.
  • Label specimens accurately.
  • Perform clerical functions.
  • Operate the Lab Info System to manage orders, batches, labels, testing, and patient accounts.
  • Collect urine and other body fluid specimens.
  • Maintain supplies in designated areas of the lab.
  • Assist technologists in non-technical tasks as requested.
  • Support phlebotomy training and safety practices.

Job Description: Phlebotomist Clerical Support
Obtains blood specimens, in a courteous and professional manner, from patients of all age ranges.

POSITION SUMMARY

Obtains blood specimens, in a courteous and professional manner, from patients of all age ranges.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Positively identify patient before obtaining specimens for laboratory testing
  • Skillfully collects blood specimens from patients of all ranges of age and uses correct tubes and handling for appropriate testing
  • Performs other blood collection skills (blood cultures, Blood Bank banding, pediatric collections) Labels specimens accurately
  • Collects urine drug screens for pre-employment, for cause, and accidents (NIDA and non-NIDA)
  • Performs clerical functions
  • Operates and understands the Lab Info System to fully utilize it to obtain orders, complete tasks necessary for all functions of the Lab (creating batches, printing labels, collecting in specimens, ordering/canceling tests, looking up results, registering a patient account, etc.)
  • Collects, receives, and/or processes urine and other body fluid specimens
  • Maintains suitable inventories of specimen collection supplies in designated areas of the department and on the drawing trays
  • Performs simple microbiological procedures (prepares stains, reagent solutions, performs environment and glassware cleaning and sterilization procedures, performs simple QC procedures)
  • Distributes specimens and supplies to the various sections of the lab
  • Assists technologists in non-technical departmental functions as requested
  • Assists and monitors phlebotomy training
  • Follows Laboratory Safety Practices (PPE, Hazardous Materials, Blood Borne Pathogens, Airborne Pathogens)
  • Knows where to find and has read the Laboratory Policy/Procedure Manual and the Safety Manual
  • Performs simple qualitative test procedures
  • May perform breath alcohol testing after proper training
  • Performs other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrates the ability to use a personal computer and various software programs applicable to the position
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate applicable office equipment
  • Exhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally & with the public
  • Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think and act independently with minimal supervision in all situations including traumas
  • Must have legible handwriting
  • Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
  • Registered as a Certified Laboratory Phlebotomist with a national certification agency for medical laboratory personnel or the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or show proof of pending recertification preferred
EXPERIENCE

Working knowledge of, but not limited to: HIS and LIS computer Systems and related equipment, 5-line telephone, Vacutainer System-syringes, butterfly needles, safety needles, finger-heelstick devices, autoclave and bar code printers preferred
