Job Description

The Phlebotomist 2 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre-analytical functions, relying on instructions and pre-established guidelines. Develops a thorough understanding of specimen collection and handling to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Must have excellent customer service skills and often works independently outside the main lab. May lead or direct the work of others.

Responsibilities
  1. Compliance/Safety: Ensure appropriate PPE is worn during sample collection and processing, maintaining a safe environment. Communicate confidential information appropriately, with no complaints.
  2. Productivity: Receive and accept specimens into the Lab Information System with proper patient identification. Operate laboratory equipment according to guidelines. Follow procedures for aseptic collection with minimal contamination. Maintain sanitary and stocked phlebotomy areas. Follow proper patient identification and specimen labeling protocols, aiming for less than 2 incidents per year. Properly utilize collection devices, with fewer than 2 incidents annually.
  3. Other duties as assigned: Participate in committees, processes, and projects as requested. Complete other assigned tasks.
Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of Phlebotomy experience.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification requirements as specified.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Phlebotomy, MLA, or MA certification/license within 3 months of employment; Certified Phlebotomist or La. Medical Laboratory Assistant license.
