Job summary

Octapharma Plasma is seeking a Phlebotomist 1 to join our donation centers and help accelerate life-saving plasma products. You will perform venipuncture and plasmapheresis under supervision, ensuring donor comfort, safety, and compliance with FDA, OSHA, CLIA, and GMP standards.

Daytime and evening hours, including weekends, are required. The role emphasizes customer service, accurate documentation, and maintaining a clean, professional environment while delivering high-quality donor care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum three months’ experience in a medical/health-care environment preferred.
• Ability to perform venipuncture.
• Strong customer service and effective communication skills.
• Ability to read and follow written/verbal protocol.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations (FDA SOP, OSHA, CLIA, GMP).
• Maintain high level of customer service and donor experience.
• Prepare equipment and supplies for venipuncture and plasmapheresis.
• Execute venipunctures and plasma collection with safety and quality standards.
• Operate plasmapheresis machines and monitor alarms and donor events.
• Document and maintain records (machine logs, donor data).
• Maintain inventory and replenish supplies.
• Troubleshoot equipment and perform routine QC checks.

Responsibilities

• Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations (e.g., FDA approved SOP, OSHA, CLIA, GMP) for the entire operation.
• Maintains a high level of customer service and a positive donor experience aligned with company values and culture.
• Maintains cleanliness of the work area to ensure a clean and professional environment.
• Reviews and confirms donor identification, upholding donor confidentiality per SOP.
• Sets up and prepares all equipment and disposable supplies for venipuncture and plasmapheresis procedures.
• Labels and ensures each unit and sample are labeled accurately.
• Executes venipunctures and plasma collection, maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
• Operates automated plasmapheresis machines, including response and evaluation of all machine alarms, alerts, donor adverse events, and documentation of exceptions.
• Monitors donor conditions, employing techniques to ensure donor comfort, safety, and quality of the plasma product.
• Maintains proper ratio to ensure donor safety and product quality.
• Disconnects donor and manages disposition of biohazard waste and contaminated equipment in accordance with safety protocols, cleaning any spills.
• Performs daily, weekly, and monthly calibration and maintenance of automated plasmapheresis machines; removes and/or replaces equipment from service when needed.
• Maintains accurate and thorough documentation of necessary records, including Plasmapheresis Machine Logs.
• Reports all unsafe situations and conditions to management.
• Maintains and stocks adequate inventory and replenishes supplies on plasma carts.
• Drives training efficiencies to ensure timeliness and compliance.
• Troubleshoots machine alarms and alerts, performing routine QCs (daily/monthly) on equipment.
• Performs other job‑related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Any specific certification or licensing based on state requirements.
• Minimum three (3) months’ experience in a medical or health‑care environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
• Completed documentation of training appropriate for duties before performing duties independently.
• Strong customer service skills required.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal protocol.
• Basic computer knowledge and skills required.
• Ability to make accurate and complete documentation.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to function effectively in a fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions.
• Demonstrated consistency and reliability (good attendance, punctuality, full effort throughout shift, flexibility with assigned schedule).
• Ability to work daytime and evening hours, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts frequently.
• Ability to perform venipuncture.
• Effective communication skills required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
• Ability to tug, lift, and pull up to thirty-five pounds.
• Ability to bend, stoop, or kneel.
• Ability to use all required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
• Occupational exposure to blood‑borne pathogens.
• Ability to view a video display terminal less than 18 inches away from the face for extended periods.
• Ability to work up to four (4) hours at a time.
• Ability to work in an environment with a temperature of -40°C per SOP.
• Ability to perform precise tasks requiring repetitive small motor skills, such as drawing blood for diagnostic tests.
• Ability to use assistive devices if needed for mobility or communication.
