Job summary

Qualifications

About this position

Job Summary: Serves patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing screening procedures. Candidate must be able to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment, while contributing to a positive environment for patients and staff. Candidate will participate in problem solving activities, must be detail oriented, sensitive to the patient’s needs, and require minimal supervision in order to function efficiently. All duties and responsibilities are essential functions and requirements and are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities. This is a position of trust.

Communication: Good oral and written communication skills are required for this position. Information must be exchanged using tact and persuasion appropriately. The person in this position must be able to communicate with the patients, staff, and others; and contribute to a positive environment. The ability to communicate in Spanish, Creole, or both is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintains professional behavior, and attitude towards patients, visitors, and co-workers.
  • Verifies test requisitions through the EHR, patient’s chart ordered by the Clinician.
  • Ensures that the correct test is being performed for the correct patient.
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
  • Follows up on results daily to resolve any problems with the specimen.
  • Enters labs retrospectively in EHR, including Ryan White (RW).
  • Follows up with Department of Health to ensure timely receipt of RW labs (viral load and CD4 counts).
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Ensures refrigerator is kept in good working order. Monitors refrigerator and freezer temperatures daily then documents in log.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, or nursing; referring unresolved orders back to the ordering provider for further clarification; notifying Office Manager.
  • Adheres to professional standards, company policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Maintains the SDS log.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Cover in both Vero Beach and Fort Pierce as needed to cover laboratory personnel when off.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • May occasionally need to travel from one clinic to another for coverage.

Education & Training:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Proof of Phlebotomy Certification.

Experience:

  • 1 to 3 years’ experience collecting and processing specimens for testing.

Requirements:

  • Level 2 background clearance required.

Must have all necessary vaccinations, a PPD Test will be done once upon hire.
