Job summary

Salem Health seeks an Outpatient Phlebotomist in the SH Lab OP Phlebotomy department. The role performs venous, arterial, and capillary collections for a variety of tests, supporting ED, inpatient, pre-surgery, and recovery areas.

Start times are 7:00 am to 1:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or equivalent experience, and 1 year of phlebotomy work or program completion.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Complete an accredited phlebotomy program or equivalent experience.
  • 1 year phlebotomy experience or completion of a program.
  • Clinical rotation at Salem Health preferred.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information System (LIS) preferred.
  • National phlebotomy certification or plan to obtain within six months.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain samples for the tests ordered.
  • Collect critical samples promptly and efficiently.
  • Follow infection control procedures.
  • Maintain patient and coworker safety.
  • Deliver exceptional patient care for specimen draws.
  • Perform Point of Care testing.
  • Collaborate with lab and non-lab teams.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities.

Department: SH Lab OP Phlebotomy

Position Type: Part-Time, 0.6 hours/week, Non-Exempt

Start Time: 7:00 am - 1:30 pm, Monday - Friday

Your Role With Us:

As the Outpatient Phlebotomist you will utilize your phlebotomy experience and compassion for administering exceptional patient care to perform a variety of specimen collections for laboratory testing. These collections include: Venous (evacuated tube, syringe, butterfly), Arterial, and Skin puncture. In addition your testing may include, but not limited to: Blood gas tests, Coagulation tests, Chemistry tests, Hematology tests, and POC tests. You will float to Emergency Department, Inpatient, Pre-surgery, and Recovery to obtain these samples.

Core Functions:
  • Obtain appropriate samples from patients for the specific tests ordered.
  • Collect critical samples immediately and efficiently.
  • Follow infection control procedure to ensure a safe work and patient environment.
  • Follow prescribed safety techniques to maintain personal, co-worker and patient safety.
  • Promote safe work practices.
  • Deliver exceptional patient care for specimen draws.
  • Corroborate with laboratory and non-laboratory teams to provide a positive patient experience.
  • Participate in assigned quality assurance activities required to maintain the established standard of departmental performance.
  • Perform Point of Care testing.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Background/Expertise:
  • Minimum of high school diploma, GED or equivalent, required.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program OR adequate draw/work experience creating eligibility to sit for a nationally recognized certification exam required.
  • One (1) year phlebotomy experience OR successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program.
  • Clinical rotation at Salem Hospital preferred.
  • Minimum of (1) year of related experience in either a clinical, medical office, or research setting preferred.
  • Experience in team process, quality management, and problem solving preferred.
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information System preferred.
  • National recognized Phlebotomy Certificate or agrees to obtain at individual’s own expense within six (6) months of hire date.
